Filaree Fruit
Filaree Fruit stands as a small yet diverse orchard perched on a land bench above the Okanogan River valley. Boasting over 30 years as a certified organic farm, Filaree has nurtured rich living soil and flourishing, robust trees.
Spanning ten acres, Filaree Fruit employs a unique approach to cultivation—a variation of swidden agriculture. This method involves long rotations of fruit, nut, and shelter trees, punctuated by shorter periods of use as smaller garden plots and pastures. Over the years, this system has proven highly effective, yielding commercially viable quantities of marketable crops. Beyond the commercial aspect, it mimics the benefits of a forest, providing a pleasant habitat for humans and animals, a sustainable source of firewood and lumber, and local climate moderation. Notably, the system also prioritizes soil health, enhancing organic matter and fostering soil life—a cornerstone of Filaree Fruit’s sustainable practices.

Filaree Fruit is a treasure trove for apple enthusiasts, offering a diverse selection of over 30 heirloom varieties. The apple season kicks off in mid-July with Vista Bellas, Nickajacks, and King Davids, progressing through late summer with Winesaps and Arkansas Blacks, and extending into the late fall. Peaches take center stage from mid-July through September, accompanied by the delightful presence of nectarines and several plum varieties.
Since 2010, Filaree Fruit has been under the ownership and care of JC and Amber Kauffman, alongside their daughter Hazel. Committed to upholding the farm’s tradition, they infuse joy into the art of tending to the orchard, ensuring that the legacy of growing beautiful and diverse fruit remains alive and vibrant.
